As the Director of Legal Services, you will report to the Chief Governance, Risk & Compliance Officer and will be responsible for leading a team of legal professionals providing legal services to the organization. This includes advising on contracts and other initiatives, identifying legal risks associated with new business opportunities, assisting the CGRO with various regulatory and compliance matters, working with external counsel and managing legal resources, and providing other legal support as needed to the organization.

 

Responsibilities

  • Oversees the triaging of all requests to review contracts from clients and assigns requests to the most appropriate resource (external counsel vs. internal counsel) for completion.
  • Reviews the work of the team to ensure quality and accuracy of contract reviews prior to presenting findings to clients.
  • Works with organizational stakeholders to assist in development of contract policies, procedures, and risk identification.
  • Provides advice to departmental leaders and executives across the business on applicable laws and the interpretation of legal documents in a manner that avails a practical legal approach while properly managing the risks to the business.
  • Maintains an up to date understanding of legal and regulatory environment for Medavie Inc., Medavie Health Services, and their subsidiary organizations and participates on committees and projects as required.
  • Contributes to significant projects, including strategic initiatives and contract negotiations, and prepares quarterly reports to the Board and Sr. Management Team.
  • Selects and approves external legal counsel firms to be used, and interfaces with external counsel on various legal matters.
  • Provides significant input in the development and implementation of legal and compliance policies and procedures.
  • Manages the portion of the budget allocated to team building and employee engagement.

 

Qualifications

  • Law Degree from an accredited Canadian University (LL.B or J.D.) or a Law Degree from outside Canada and Certificate of Qualification from the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA).
  • Member in good standing with the Law Society in at least one of Medavie’s operating jurisdictions, or eligible for membership and can become member by starting date.
  • 5-10 years experience as legal counsel or practicing lawyer.
  • 3+ years experience as in-house counsel preferred.
  • 2-5 years leading a team of legal professionals.
  • Understanding of contract law.
  • Understanding of compliance and regulatory adherence.
  • Solid working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Bilingualism (ENG/FR) considered an asset.
