Reporting to the Director, Human Resources Operations, the Human Resources Business Partner is a strategic, hands-on role that provides full cycle Human Resources leadership on organizational initiatives for our two EMS services in Ontario – Elgin EMS and Chatham-Kent EMS.
As the HRBP, you will establish and maintain professional and collaborative relationships with internal clients, stakeholders, and bargaining units. You will be responsible for providing proactive, effective labour relations services, including grievance handling, collective agreement interpretation, overseeing projects, and ongoing consultation to all levels of management. You will play a critical role in executing our people initiatives, providing great internal customer support, and driving HR functional excellence.
Responsibilities
- Be a true business partner to organizational leadership, other divisional functions, and employees in all HR matters by understanding business challenges and goals, and developing trusting relationships
- Provide consistent advice, assistance, and communication to supervisors and managers in matters of HR policies and procedures, staffing, compensation/benefits, performance management, attendance, disability management, leaves, etc.
- Counsel and coach leaders on conflict resolution, collective agreement interpretation, absenteeism, discipline, and workplace harassment
- Lead performance development with the departments, establishing annual goals and linking to the organization’s strategic direction
- Provide advice on compliance with applicable legislation such as the Employment Standards Act, Labour Relations Act, Human Rights Code, and EMS specific policies
- Handle grievances, conduct research, negotiate solutions, communicate responses, and prepare for arbitration hearings
- Help maintain strong, rewarding, and equitable relationships with employees through application of policies, processes, and access to education.
- Provide support and lead investigations on employee concerns or complaints, absence and sickness, HR issues and respectful workplace
- Create, plan, and deliver HR program materials and internal policies
- Lead all aspects of recruiting, tracking, and monitoring candidate information, selection and hiring of new employees
- Work as a change agent in the development and execution of HR initiatives
Requirements
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in an HR generalist role within a union environment required
- Post-secondary education specializing in Human Resources, Industrial Relations, or Business Administration. CPHR considered an asset
- Proven experience leading major Human Resources initiatives from implementation through to execution
- Experience with rapid and complex changing work environment
- Passion for innovative HR solutions and process improvement
- Strong project management skills: ability to lead projects at a network level to influence and obtain buy-in, and then drive execution and achievement of the right results
- Prior success in creating and driving effective employee relations, retention, and reward programs
- Comfortable with high volume workload and strong deliverables along with the ability to identify problems and drive appropriate solutions
- Proven conflict resolution skills
- Strong internal and external customer service focus
- Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously - orientated on results
