Position Summary

The Data Engineering Specialist will work to support Data Scientists and Data Analysts as part of our new Advanced Analytics Centre of Excellence, providing infrastructure and tools that can be used to deliver end-to-end solutions to business problems. They will build scalable, high performance infrastructure for delivering clear business insights from raw data sources. The hire will be responsible for expanding and optimizing our data and data pipeline architecture, as well as optimizing data flow and collection. The ideal candidate is an experienced data pipeline builder and data wrangler who enjoys optimizing data systems and building them from the ground up. They will also have a passion for Data Science and for leveraging data-driven decision making. The candidate will be excited by the prospect of optimizing or even re-designing our company’s data architecture to establish a foundation for our Advanced Analytics Centre of Excellence.


In this role, the Data Engineering Specialist must develop a well-structured and actionable strategy regarding both internal and external data. Internal data will need to be organized in ways that enable and support the development of new analytics insights and capabilities. With external data, the Data Engineering Specialist must focus on securing access to data that enriches and complements their internal data sets. As the external data ecosystem continues to expand, it will likely remain highly fragmented, making it quite difficult to identify high- quality data at a reasonable cost. Overall, data strategy will need to include a variety of ways to obtain and secure access to external data, as well as ways to combine this data with internal sources.


Key Responsibilities


•    Create and maintain optimal data pipeline architecture,
•    Assemble large, complex data sets
•    Prepare data for predictive modeling
•    Develop analytical tools and programs
•    Combine raw information from different sources
•    Explore ways to enhance data quality and reliability
•    Identify opportunities for data acquisition
•    Plan and coordinate complex operations with several teams and colleagues within Medavie Blue Cross
•    Perform in an environment where projects and deadlines are subject to frequent changes


Required Qualifications



•    Degree in Computer Science, Analytics, or similar field


Work Experience:

•    5+ years of relevant experience in a data engineering or similar type of role. Experience working with insurance data is a major plus


Other Qualifications:

•    Successful history of building and optimizing data sets, big data pipelines and architectures
•    Excellent analytics skills with a passion for Data Science
•    Ability to advise and persuade with respect to problems of a complex nature by providing content matter expertise in solving these problems
•    Experience supporting and working with cross-functional teams in a dynamic environment
•    Strong project management and organizational skills


Language Skills:    Writing, speaking, and reading in English is required. French is considered an asset.
