The Opportunity


As a Group Medical Underwriter, you will be responsible for assessing the risk during enrolment of group applicants applying for benefits offered by Medavie Blue Cross under our group plans and products. 


Key Responsibilities


  • Ability to demonstrate deductive reasoning through medically underwriting the risks presented by new and/or existing group policies while conforming to underwriting guidelines, procedures and standards developed by the company and our reinsurers to evaluate different medical conditions and the risk they present;
  • Ability to confidently explain your decisions on applications and requests to internal and external clients;
  • Submit all medical underwriting cases to the designated approvers;
  • Ensure the medical information being provided is accurate and complete through effective communication with advisors, applicants, team members and medical personnel;
  • Respond to general and complex inquiries from plan members, internal stakeholders, plan advisors and in-bound calls from Contact Centre regarding medical underwriting decisions;
  • Strong insurance and group product knowledge is required in order to effectively analyze results and provide decisions based on applicant eligibility;
  • Adhere to corporate confidentiality and privacy guidelines; and
  • Build effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.




Education: Certificate or Diploma from a recognized post-secondary education program or equivalent; Medical office administration/ health care diploma or equivalent.


Work Experience: Two years of experience with our group line of business or equivalent. 


Computer Skills:  Proficiency in MS Office Suite programs accompanied with strong keyboarding skills; Sales Force experience, ability to navigate between various applications. Experience with POS, MS, Scepter and Maax are all assets. 


Language Skills: Bilingualism is required.
