Position Summary
The results-oriented incumbent as a member of the pharmacy strategy team for group benefits supports the profitability and continued growth of the drug benefit component  for the organization through the management and maintenance of drug formularies and plan management options. The Product Specialist is primarily responsible for the prompt execution of drug-benefit inquiries, supporting the onboarding of new clients and for the operationalization of the formularies and plan management options.


The Product Specialist is also accountable to support the Pharmacy Strategy team with various operational requests and to assist with all activities designed to raise the profile of the Drug Operations team with colleagues, clients and the provider/drug manufacturer community.
Key Responsibilities

  • Input to the strategy, lead, manage and maintain drug formularies and plan management options based on industry and client requests;
  • Supports new client onboarding through the operationalization of drug plan design and mapping standards;
  • Supports business development with initiatives to enhance existing clients’ drug formularies to create efficiencies and/or to achieve cost-savings;
  • Responds to drug benefit inquiries, including but not limited to pricing, drug product availability, coverage inquiry or new product additions; 
  • Manages the operationalization of financial aspects of product listing agreements with pharmaceutical manufacturers as appropriate for the negotiated terms;
  • Develops and maintains product comparison (strengths, weaknesses)
  • Develops and maintains detailed process documentation for all operational aspects of the role and strives for continuous process improvement opportunities and efficiencies;
  • Ensures appropriate and timely resolution of escalations related to queries on drug formularies or plan management features;
  • Stays informed of industry trends and recommend enhancements to improve efficiencies; 
  • Coaches and mentors Drug Benefit Analysts, including adequate quality assurance of tasks to ensure accuracy and execution of assigned tasks;
  • Supports activities designed to provide ongoing education to colleagues about the role of Pharmacy Strategy group  and its mandate.

Required Qualifications 

  • Education: Post-secondary education in healthcare, business or a related field;
  • Work Experience: Two or more years of related experience;
  • Other Qualifications: Previous experience in a pharmacy, clinical and/or the insurance industry would be considered an asset;
  • Computer Skills: Agile in using the MS Office Suite of products and manipulating data;
  • Comfortable with basic Excel functions and formulas and willing to expand proficiency;
  • Ability to work simultaneously with legacy and new technology;
  • Language Skills: Bilingualism is considered an asset.
